Defending champion Michael White was knocked out of the Paul Hunter Classic at the last 32 stage, losing 4-1 to China’s Zhang Anda.
White won his second career ranking title a year ago in Fürth when he beat Shaun Murphy in the final, and he made a strong start this time with wins over Thor Chuan Leong and Allan Taylor to reach the third round. But the Welshman was then outplayed by Zhang, who fired breaks of 91, 60 and 50 as he booked a place in the last 16 on Sunday.
Zhang’s next opponent will be Harvey Chandler, who continues to impress in his rookie pro season. In the last 32, Northamptonshire’s Chandler beat Mark Joyce 4-0 with top runs of 60, 65 and 82.
Promising teenager Jackson Page reached the last 16 of a ranking event for the first time by beating Sam Baird 4-3. From 3-2 down, 17-year-old amateur Page made a superb 141 in frame six then dominated the decider.
Chris Wakelin made breaks of 116 and 144 in a 4-2 win over Luca Brecel, while veteran Peter Ebdon beat Mark King by the same scoreline.
