Snooker’s new Evergrande China Championship took place for the first time in 2016 with a top prize of £200,000, the biggest ever for a tournament outside the UK.

It was staged in the city of Guangzhou in the Guangdong Province of South East China. John Higgins beat Stuart Bingham 10-7 in the final.

From 2017, it will become a world ranking event, contested by 128 players. Total prize money for the 2017 edition will be £700,000 with the winner’s cheque at £150,000.

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: “We are thrilled to be working with the promoter Evergrande and the CBSA on this brand new event. Our global calendar gets busier every season and this is a major addition. Alongside our partners in China we’re creating a very bright future for our sport.”
