Greg Coniglio keeps an eye on Liang Wenbo
Sunday’s Coral English Open conclusion will bring a proud moment for Greg Coniglio as he referees a ranking event final in his home city.
Manchester’s 46-year-old Coniglio will don the white gloves for the best-of-17 clash between Judd Trump and either Stuart Bingham or Liang Wenbo at Event City.
It will be his second ranking final, having officiated his first at last season’s World Grand Prix in Llandudno.
“I’m really looking forward to the final,” said Coniglio, who is a keen snooker player with a top break of 127. “It has been really enjoyable all week because I’ve seen a lot of familiar faces in the crowd. In my first final Shaun Murphy beat Stuart Bingham 10-9, so if it’s anything like that it will be amazing.”
Malgorzata Kanieska in conversation with John Higgins
Tonight’s semi-final between Bingham and Liang will be refereed by Poland’s Malgorzata Kanieska. Her first ranking semi-final came at the Riga Masters earlier this season and this will be her second.
“Riga was great experience for me, and this week has also been a fantastic opportunity,” said the 27-year-old from Warsaw, who studied space engineering at university but now works in media monitoring when she is not refereeing. “I can’t wait for the semi-final tonight. All of the other referees have give me a lot of advice and support.”
