O’Neill qualified for the 2007/08 professional Tour by finishing 6th in the Pontin’s International Open Series Order of Merit.
He won the sixth of eight events, beating Ashley Wright 6-2 in the final at Prestatyn.
Graduation to the Tour was a relief for the player who had missed out by just one match the previous season.
O’Neill has won two significant amateur titles - the 2003 European Under-19 Championship and the 2006 English Open. He won the latter by beating Jeff Cundy 8-3 in the final.
O’Neill, who practises at Rushden Snooker Centre where former Crucible champs Peter Ebdon and Shaun Murphy honed their skills, certainly doesn’t lack confidence.
"I’m going into the World Championship qualifiers in January to win the whole tournament," he said. "You’ve got to look at winning all of them with a very positive attitude. It’s the dream of every snooker player and I’m hoping to achieve it next year."
