Hull’s highlight of the 2006/07 season came at the Maplin UK Championship in York.
Qualifying victories over Jeff Cundy and Jimmy White booked the Finn a trip to the venue and terrific performances against Nigel Bond and recently crowned Royal London Watches Grand Prix champion Neil Robertson put him into the last 16.
The London based player was unable to repeat his earlier form and went out 9-1 to Graeme Dott.
The remainder of the season produced few positives for Hull and he ended it on a low note as he was forced to withdraw from the 888.com World Snooker Championship qualifiers due to illness.
That was a remnant of the life-threatening super virus which caused him to miss five ranking events at the tail end of the 2003/04 season. He won his first match in almost a year when he beat Adrian Gunnell in the qualifiers for the 2004 UK Championship, then revealed the full extent of the ailment.
"I lost 80 per cent of my balance and the virus also affected my heart and lungs," he said. "I had to have similar physiotherapy to that given to stroke victims and I still have numbness on my right side.
"There was a time when I couldn’t go out of a room. My confidence was badly damaged because I couldn’t do a simple thing like walking to a bus stop without feeling very ill and dizzy. My neurologist tried to keep me positive but it was very frightening as you tend to fear the worst.
"In any walk of life it would be a terrible thing, but for a snooker player it was a nightmare. I couldn’t get down to the table to play a shot without being physically sick. I’m just grateful that I’ve got a clean bill of health now and I’m looking ahead. It’s given me a new perspective as the pressure of playing a game of snooker doesn’t seem as bad now."
Hull reached the quarter-finals of a world ranking tournament for the first time at the 2003 Welsh Open. He followed up qualifying victories over Stuart Pettman and Chris Small by beating Graeme Dott and John Higgins at the Cardiff International Arena. He then gave Mark Williams a fright in the last eight before going out 5-4.
He was also a quarter-finalist at the 2006 Malta Cup.
Hull qualified for the televised phase of the World Championship for the first time in 2002, winning four matches at Telford and then beating six-time champion Steve Davis 10-8 at Newport to secure his place at the Crucible.
"It’s every snooker player’s ambition to perform at Sheffield," he said. He was not able to produce his best at the game’s most famous venue and went down 10-6 to Dott.
Hull missed the final black when poised to complete a 147 maximum break during qualifying for the 1999 World Championship.
