McManus’ best run of the 2007/08 season took him to the last 32 of the Welsh Open. He beat Mark Joyce and Dominic Dale before losing to Ken Doherty.
McManus won his first qualifying match in the 888.com World Snooker Championship, beating Supoj Saenla, but then lost to Marco Fu with a trip to the Crucible at stake. He finished the season up one place in the official rankings to No 37 – but down to No 44 on the provisional list.
His last major final was at the 2002 LG Cup at the Guild Hall when he lost 9-5 to countryman Chris Small.
The Glaswegian’s finest moment in snooker came at Wembley Conference Centre in 1994 when he beat Stephen Hendry 9-8 in a classic Masters final – the first match Hendry had ever lost in the event.
McManus went on to win two ranking titles, beating Peter Ebdon 9-6 in the final of the Dubai Classic and Doherty 9-8 at the 1996 Thailand Open. He was also a member of the victorious Scottish team at the 1996 World Cup and 2001 Nations Cup, alongside Hendry and John Higgins.
Considered one of the best tactical players in the sport, McManus is nicknamed Angles because of his knowledge of the table and ability to escape from snookers.
McManus is an accomplished golfer, despite employing an unorthodox cross-handed grip. He supports Celtic and, unusually for a Scot, is a keen cricket fan. His favourite music includes U2 and Guns n’ Roses.
