Gunnell enjoyed a superb start to the 2007/08 season as he matched his best ever performance in a ranking event. Having qualified for the Roewe Shanghai Masters, he beat wild card Jin Long and Ali Carter before losing to Dominic Dale in the last 16. The Shropshire cueman obviously enjoys playing in Asia – all three of his last 16 appearances have come on that continent.
Gunnell’s best result of the season was a 9-7 defeat of Matthew Stevens, from 5-2 down, in the final qualifying round of the Maplin UK Championship, which moved to Telford for the first time and thus became his home tournament. “It’s great to get through because it’s fantastic for Telford to have this tournament,” he said. Sadly he couldn’t give his fans much to cheer about at the venue as he went down 9-3 to Ding Junhui.
At the end of the season, Gunnell reached the final qualifying round of the 888.com World Snooker Championship, but lost 10-3 to Stuart Bingham. His goals of playing at the Crucible and climbing into the top 32 of the rankings therefore had to be put on the back-burner for another year.
Practising against friend Ian Duffy at a club in Telford in 2003, Gunnell pulled off an extraordinary feat with three maximum 147 breaks in the space of four frames.
