Day found an impressive level of consistency during the 2007/08 season, losing just one first round match in seven ranking events. His results saw him move to a career high position of No 8 in the official rankings – and he started the 08/09 campaign even higher on the provisional list at No 5.
The season started well for the talented Welshman as he reached the final of the Roewe Shanghai Masters. Wins over Tony Drago, Ian McCulloch, Matthew Stevens and Graeme Dott set up a final clash with countryman Dominic Dale.
Leading 6-2, Day looked strong favourite to go on to claim his first ranking title, but Spaceman Dale flew back to win the last eight frames for a 10-6 scoreline. “Dom had a bit of run of the ball but he played very well and the match just seemed to get away from me,” admitted Day. "I’m very disappointed but to get to the final is still a good start to the season and I can build on this."
Day clearly enjoys playing in China as his best run in the remainder of the season came at the Honghe Industrial China Open in Beijing. He beat Matthew Stevens, Ken Doherty and Mark Williams to get set up an epic semi-final tussle with Stephen Maguire, which he eventually lost 6-5.
On to the 888.com World Snooker Championship, and Day started impressively with a 10-6 defeat of Michael Judge. He went on to record arguably the best result of his career in the second round, beating defending champion John Higgins 13-9. But his dreams of reaching the one-table set-up were ended by another great Scot in the quarter-finals as he went down 13-7 to Stephen Hendry.
The previous season had been a landmark one for Day as he reached his first ranking final and broke into the top 16 for the first time.
At the Malta Cup in the Portomaso Hilton, he saw off Matthew Stevens, Fergal O’Brien, Mark King and Peter Ebdon to reach the final. "Lots of people back home and people in the press have said that I’ve got the game to win tournaments so it’s nice to finally get to a final," he said.
Day did not produce his best in the final against Shaun Murphy, falling 6-1 behind and eventually losing 9-4. "I was disappointed by the way I played in the first session, I had chances in virtually every frame," said the Welshman. "But I’ve had a good week and won some good matches."
Day lost 10-9 to John Higgins at Sheffield in 2004, despite becoming the only player to make three centuries on his Crucible debut.
His biggest title to date was the 2001 B&H Championship when he beat Hugh Abernethy in the final to earn a wild card entry to the Masters. He beat Dave Harold 6-3 in the first round at Wembley before losing 6-0 to Stephen Hendry. At the end of that season he was awarded the WPBSA Newcomer of the Year award.
His girlfriend Lynsey gave birth to their daughter Francesca in August 2006. He then married Lynsey, who is the younger sister of his father’s second wife, in a ceremony in Pontycymer in 2008 attended by a host of top snooker players including Mark Williams, Stephen Maguire, Matthew Stevens and Dominic Dale.
Day’s younger brother Rhys has played football for Manchester City and the Welsh under-21 side and is now captain of Aldershot.
