Though Stephen Maguire’s 2006/07 season finished in desperate disappointment, it was a campaign in which he moved back towards the form which made him arguably the best player in the sport in 2004.
After a poor 2005/06 season, Maguire reached three major semi-finals last term and climbed to fifth in the provisional rankings.
His first semi was at the SAGA Insurance Masters where he beat John Higgins and Neil Robertson before losing to Ronnie O’Sullivan.
The second was at the Welsh Open where he beat Alan McManus, Ken Doherty and Shaun Murphy only to suffer defeat to surprise package Andrew Higginson.
And the third was on the biggest stage – the 888.com World Snooker Championship where Maguire had never previously been beyond the last 16.
He broke that barrier with wins over Joe Perry and Joe Swail then played superbly in the closing session to beat Anthony Hamilton 13-7.
And the Merlin of Milton looked set for the final when he led friend and practice partner John Higgins 14-10, but the Wizard of Wishaw produced some magic of his own at the Crucible to win 17-15.
"I’m just numb. I had a great opportunity to win the title. I just can’t believe it," said Maguire. "The trophy was there for me to win it because I felt the winner of our match would go on to lift it. I’ve just thrown away a good opportunity to be world champion. I knew I was playing well enough to win this. But once John has picked up the trophy and it’s back in Scotland we’ll have a night out to celebrate his win."
Maguire made his first breakthrough in March 2004 when he hammered Jimmy White 9-3 in the final of the European Open in Malta to win his maiden major title.
Eight months later he captured a more prestigious crown with victory in the UK Championship, snooker’s most significant ranking tournament other than the World Championship.
His 9-6 first round defeat of Ronnie O’Sullivan at the York Barbican Centre prompted the Rocket to suggest that Maguire could "rule the game for the next ten years." He stormed through to the final then easily saw off David Gray 10-1.
At the previous tournament, the British Open in Brighton, Maguire reached the final before losing 9-6 to John Higgins. He had made a record five consecutive century breaks over two matches – three on the spin to finish his quarter-final against Anthony Hamilton and two more at the start of his semi against O’Sullivan.
Those results helped him to No 3 in the world rankings.
Former world amateur champion Maguire made a 147 maximum during the pre-TV rounds of the 2000 Scottish Open.
Away from snooker, Maguire enjoys playing badminton and going to the gym. He got engaged to girlfriend Sharon in 2004 and their son Finn was born in 2006. A fan of animals, he once kept baby sharks in a tank in his bedroom and now has two bulldogs called Troy and Kyra.
