The 2007/08 season yielded few highlights for Hamilton. He failed to progress beyond the last 32 of any of the season’s seven ranking events, and dropped five places down the official list to No 31.
He did have the consolation of qualifying for the televised stages of the 888.com World Snooker Championship thanks to a 10-2 defeat of Scott MacKenzie, but then lost to Stephen Maguire at the Crucible by a similarly emphatic margin, 10-3.
"Average, just average,” was how Hamilton summed up his season after the match.
A year earlier, the Sheriff of Pottingham had reached the fourth Crucible quarter-final of his career, beating Marco Fu and Ian McCulloch before losing to Maguire.
Known as one of the most accomplished break-builders in the sport and a member of a select band of players to have made over 100 centuries, Hamilton has appeared in two ranking event finals.
The first was the 1999 British Open in Plymouth when he lost 9-7 to Fergal O’Brien. In 2002 in Shanghai he faced Mark Williams in the China Open final and looked set for the title when he led 8-5, only for the Welshman to fight back to win the last four frames. He did win the Australian Open and Australian Masters - both non-ranking events - in 1995.
Hamilton missed the first three tournaments of the 2000/01 season after breaking his wrist when he boldly tried to stop a mugger stealing his friend’s wallet.
He enjoys watching sport and listening to bands such as Led Zeppelin and the Stone Roses.
