Ebdon reached the quarter-finals of three ranking events last season – but was unable to add to his collection of silverware.
He played perhaps his best snooker of the campaign at the Royal London Watches Grand Prix, winning all five of his round robin matches. He also came within two pots of his first maximum break for 15 years – missing the final pink with a 147 at his mercy. Ebdon went on to beat Barry Hawkins in the last 16 before losing to Shaun Murphy.
At the Northern Ireland Trophy, Ebdon knocked out Adrian Gunnell and Steve Davis before Murphy again denied him a semi-final berth.
Ebdon has a fine record at the 888.com World Snooker Championship, and started his Crucible bid with a 10-9 victory over Jamie Cope in one of the best matches of the championship.
”Jamie’s very entertaining to watch, I’m sure the crowd loved it. I was probably the only one in there having an absolute mare, he was knocking everything in from everywhere,” said Ebdon. “It was a really thorough and stiff examination. I need a couple of weeks to recover!”
He did recover in time to beat Mark King 13-9, only to lose by the same scoreline to Ali Carter.
The player nicknamed The Force finished the campaign with a drop of three places down the rankings to No 9.
The previous season was one of Ebdon’s finest as he joined the select band of players to have won snooker’s two biggest ranking titles.
At the Maplin UK Championship in York, he beat Mark Selby, Stuart Bingham and Ding Junhui to reach the semi-finals then produced what he described as one of his best ever performances to beat John Higgins 9-7.
In the final he faced old adversary Stephen Hendry and came from 3-1 down to score a 10-6 victory. That made him only the ninth player in snooker history to have lifted both the world and UK crowns, joining Steve Davis, Terry Griffiths, Alex Higgins, Hendry, John Parrott, Ronnie O’Sullivan, John Higgins and Mark Williams.
He first reached the final at the Crucible in 1996, losing 18-12 to Stephen Hendry, but gained his revenge on the Scot in 2002 and fulfilled a lifelong ambition.
Ebdon probably prepares more thoroughly for the Sheffield event than any other player, swimming a mile a day and following a strict diet in order to maximise his physical fitness and stamina.
This proved vital as he beat Hendry 18-17 in an epic final, making a crucial break of 59 in the 35th and last frame. "I always believed that I could win it but to actually do it is something else," he said.
He has won five other rankings titles and was also Crucible runner up in 2006, losing 18-14 to Graeme Dott..
Along with wife Deborah and children Ruby May, Ethan, Tristan and eldest Clarissa, Ebdon moved to Dubai in 2005. "It’s a fantastic lifestyle there and a much safer environment for the children to grow up in," he said.
Among the many strings to his bow, Ebdon is an expert on equine breeding and studied Latin and Ancient Greek at school. He is a devotee of Napoleon Hill’s classic motivational book Think and Grow Rich and presented a copy to each of 116 pupils at the school he attended as a teenager, Highbury Grove.
Passionate about music, Ebdon played the oboe at school and has sung on two pop singles.
