  • 19 Ranking event wins including: 1999 UK Championship, 2000 World Championship, 2002 UK Championship, 2002 China Open, 2003 World Championship
  • 1998, 2003 Masters Winner
  • The Welshman won his first ranking silverware in six years at the Northern Ireland in Belfast. He overcame young Chinese star Yan Bingtao 9-8 in a thrilling final to pick up the Alex Higgins Trophy.
  • Williams agonisingly missed out on a spot at the 2017 World Championship. The two-time Crucible winner needed to win the season’s penultimate event, the China Open, to move into the top 16 and qualify directly. He battled to reach the final, but lost out 10-8 in a terrific showpiece match with Mark Selby. The Welshman then lost out in qualifying to Stuart Carrington at Ponds Forge.
  • Williams made the last eight of the 2016 World Championship. The first time he had reached that stage in five years. After a comprehensive win over Graeme Dott at the Crucible, Williams beat good friend Michael Holt 13-8 in the last 32. Disaster struck before his quarter-final tie with Ding Junhui, the tip of his cue split the night before he was due to play. Williams struggled with the new tip and succumbed to a 13-3 defeat.
  • The Welshman enjoyed a successful 2014/15 campaign. He reached the semi-finals of the 2014 International Championship in China, he was only denied a spot in the final by a dramatic 9-8 defeat against Mark Allen.
  • Williams also reached the semi-finals of the 2015 Welsh Open in Cardiff, but was once again denied in the deciding frame, losing 6-5 to Ben Woollaston.
  • He did get his hands on a trophy that year, winning the World Seniors Championship in Blackpool at the first attempt, by beating Fergal O’Brien 2-1 in the final.
  • Williams won his first main world crown in 2000. He was 13-7 down in the final to countryman Matthew Stevens, but turned it around to win 18-16 at the Crucible.
  • He became a multiple World Champion three years later as he staved off a tremendous fight from Ken Doherty, to claim another 18-16 victory in a tense final. That completed an incredible hat-trick of snooker’s biggest titles, having won the UK Championship and Masters earlier that year.
  • The Welshman won his first of two Masters title in 1999. It came in the most dramatic of circumstances as his final with Stephen Hendry came down to a respotted black. Hendry missed a chance to the centre before Williams potted it in the baulk corner to take the title.
  • He made the first competitive 147 of his career in a match against Rob Milkins at the World Championships in 2005 – and that was handy timing as it scooped him a £161,000 bonus. He became the fifth player to make a maximum at the Crucible.
  • Williams was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2004 .
  • In his teenage years, Williams was a keen boxer and won several fights before a defeat against an older, heavier opponent which curtailed his career in the ring.
