Wells showed considerable potential during his debut season on the pro Tour in 2008/09.
The young Welshman came within a frame of a first appearance at the home of snooker, the Crucible.
Having seen off Li Hang, Ian Preece and Marcus Campbell, all by the same 10-9 scoreline, he faced Barry Hawkins for a place in the last 32 of the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship.
Wells came from 9-7 down to 9-9, knocking in a break of 85 to force the decider, but was unable to repeat the feat as Hawkins used all his experience to compile a match winning run of 80.
Despite his disappointment at the result, his run gained him enough points to ensure a second season on the main Tour and a chance to improve upon his first year.
Wells is one of a trio of emerging gifted young Welsh players, who all went to the same school in Neath.
A contempary of Jamie Jones and Michael White, Wells got his big break in snooker in 2007 when he was selected as the inaugural recipient of the Paul Hunter Scholarship scheme.
A year of training at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield helped him develop his game, particularly the chance to practise daily with the likes of Peter Ebdon, Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo.
Wells finished sixth in the 2007/08 Pontin’s International Open Series, reaching one final and one semi, to earn one of the eight promotion places to the main circuit.
During his scholarship course, he wrote a regular diary on worldsnooker.com
He reached the semi-finals of the World Under-21 Championship in India in 2007.
