Gerard Greene’s form was steady, if unspectacular, during the 2008/09 season. He won his opening match in six of the eight ranking events, but failed to reach the last 16 of any of those.
He best result of the campaign was a 10-5 defeat of Ken Doherty in the final qualifying round of the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, to make it to the Crucible for the fourth time. “Everyone wants to get there,” he said. “Hopefully this time I can sneak through the first round. If I play well I’ll be a test for anyone."
However, Greene was unable to make it to round two at Sheffield for the first time in his career as he went down 10-5 to Ali Carter. His results over the season were just enough to keep him in the top 32 of the rankings as he finished 32nd on the official list.
At the 2007 Royal London Watches Grand Prix in Aberdeen, Greene enjoyed the best run of his career. After making it through the round robin phase, he beat Ricky Walden and Joe Perry to earn his first ranking semi-final. "I’m chuffed,” he said. “I’ve never doubted that I’m good enough to win a tournament and I’ll carry on until I do so, even if I have to play until I’m 90."
It could have been even better for Greene but his battle with Marco Fu ended in an agonising 6-5 defeat when he missed the brown in the deciding frame when he needed just four more pots to set up a final with Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Greene lives in Kent but his family come from Belfast. He helped Northern Ireland to victories over the Republic of Ireland and England and a place in the semi-finals of the Nations Cup at the Hexagon, Reading, in 2001.
