Greene won his opening match in five of the six ranking events staged during the 2009/10 season, the only exception being the Welsh Open. However, he was unable to progress beyond the last 32 of any tournament.
The Betfred.com World Snooker Championship saw him edge out Rory McLeod 10-9 in the final qualifying round. He drew Shaun Murphy at the Crucible, and made a spirited comeback from 8-1 down but eventually lost 10-7. “In the first session I was a bit nervous, I totally collapsed,” admitted Greene, who ended the season with a rise of two places up the rankings to No 28.
At the 2007 Grand Prix in Aberdeen, Greene enjoyed the best run of his career. After making it through the round robin phase, he beat Ricky Walden and Joe Perry to earn his first ranking semi-final. "I’m chuffed,” he said. “I’ve never doubted that I’m good enough to win a tournament and I’ll carry on until I do so, even if I have to play until I’m 90."
It could have been even better for Greene but his battle with Marco Fu ended in an agonising 6-5 defeat when he missed the brown in the deciding frame when he needed just four more pots to set up a final with Ronnie O’Sullivan.
Greene lives in Kent but his family come from Belfast. He helped Northern Ireland to victories over the Republic of Ireland and England and a place in the semi-finals of the Nations Cup at the Hexagon, Reading, in 2001.
