Pettman enjoyed the best season of his career in 2008/09, including a brilliant run to the semi-finals of the Bank of Beijing China Open.
After beating Peter Lines, Alan McManus and Steve Davis to earn his place on the flight to Beijing, Pettman went on to knock out Cao Yupeng, Mark Allen, Ali Carter and Graeme Dott to reach the first ranking semi-final of his 17-year career. "When you win a couple of matches you want to go on and win the whole thing,” he said. “Deep down I knew I could do this but it was just a case of bringing it out on this stage.”
His run was finally ended with a 6-1 defeat to eventual champion Peter Ebdon. "I couldn’t get going but it has been good experience and hopefully I can do better next year,” said Pettman. “This season has been a first for me with the time and effort I’ve put in. For the last ten years I’ve wasted my time. Rewards like this make you want to work harder.”
The Lancastrian lost his opening match in just one of the eight ranking events during the campaign, and jumped 25 places up the official ranking list to 37th. He starts the 2009/10 campaign even higher – in 29th place on the one-year list.
Pettman reached the last 16 of a ranking tournament for the first time in his 13-year career at the 2005 Malta Cup – having fallen on ten previous occasions at the last 32 stage.
He beat Shokat Ali and John Parrott to qualify for the final stages at the Hilton Conference Centre in Portomaso then shocked Paul Hunter with a 5-3 victory. His run was brought to an end by Steve Davis. He then made the last 16 of the 2005 Grand Prix, inspired by his home fans at the Guild Hall in Preston. He knocked Graeme Dott and Lee Walker out of the Grand Prix before suffering a 5-4 defeat to David Gray.
Pettman qualified for the televised stages of the World Championship in 2003 and 2004. He was unable to progress beyond the first round at the Crucible after being drawn against Mark Williams on the first occasion and Stephen Hendry on the latter.
