Lawler enjoyed an excellent 2009/10 season and jumped 12 places up the world ranking list to No 49.
After reaching the last 48 of the Grand Prix, he went a step further in the Sanyuan Foods China Open and qualified for the venue.
He beat Matthew Selt, Dominic Dale and Ricky Walden to earn a seat on the flight to Beijing, then knocked out wild card Supoj Saenla before his run was ended by Mark Selby.
Lawler also reached the last 48 of the Betfred.com World Championship, beating Noppadol Sangnil and Dominic Dale before being denied a place at the Crucible by Liang Wenbo.
Lawler reached the final of the International Open in 1996, beating Stephen Hendry 5-2 in the second round and winning six matches in all before John Higgins ended his title dream with a 9-3 victory.
He claimed two notable scalps in the 1995 World Championship, defeating 1985 champion Dennis Taylor 10-5 in the final qualifying round and then shocking 1991 winner John Parrott 10-6 in the first round proper at Sheffield.
