Last season, Lawler’s best results came at overseas tournaments. Wins over Lewis Roberts, Dave Gilbert and Ian McCulloch booked him a flight to the first tournament to be staged in the Kingdom of Bahrain. He beat Isa Ali Al-Hasmi, 5-1 in the wildcard round before losing by the same score to Joe Perry in the last 32.
In the season’s penultimate event, the Bank of Beijing 2009 World Snooker China Open, he defeated Daniel Wells, Adrian Gunnell and Matthew Stevens to earn another trip abroad. This time he wasn’t successful in the wildcard round, losing out to Yu Delu 5-3. He drops one place in the rankings to No 61.
Lawler reached the final of the International Open in 1996, beating Stephen Hendry 5-2 in the second round and winning six matches in all before John Higgins ended his title dream with a 9-3 victory.
He claimed two notable scalps in the 1995 World Championship, defeating 1985 champion Dennis Taylor 10-5 in the final qualifying round and then shocking 1991 winner John Parrott 10-6 in the first round proper at Sheffield..
