Michie had a purple patch midway through the 2008/09 season that saw him reach the last 32 of the Royal London Watches Grand Prix and the last 48 of the Bahrain Snooker Championship and the Maplin UK Championship.
His run in Glasgow saw him beat Andy Lee and Dominic Dale to qualify. In the first round he drew defending champion Marco Fu and led 2-0 but the Hong Kong cueman won the next five to progress.
Another last 48 place at the Bank of Beijing World Snooker China Open enabled Michie to finish 48th in the rankings.
The Yorkshireman appeared in the semi-finals of the 2002 LG Cup at the Guild Hall in Preston. He beat the likes of Marco Fu and Mark King then came from 4-1 down to beat Gerard Greene 5-4 in the quarter-finals.
“I have taken the game for granted in the last few years,” he said. “But I want to see if I can win a tournament before I finish playing.” He wasn’t able to achieve that ambition as he went down 6-2 to eventual champion Chris Small.
His fortunes took a sharp turn for the worse two months later when his car was stolen - with his cue in the boot. Despite an offer of £1,000 for its safe return, he did not get the cue back.
Michie’s first semi-final came at the 1999 British Open. He beat Tony Drago, Marcus Campbell, Ronnie O’Sullivan and John Parrott before going out to Anthony Hamilton.
He made his first and only Crucible appearance to date at the 1996 World Championship. The charismatic cueman arrived in a stretch limo but made a low-key exit after losing 10-8 to James Wattana in the first round.
Michie has embarked upon a fitness regime, aimed primarily at getting into shape to run half and full marathons, to raise money for charity as well as improve his performances on the table.
