The 2009/10 season was a disappointing one for Holt as he won just three matches in the six ranking events staged.
He at least achieved that in the three BBC ranking tournaments, qualifying for the televised stages of the Grand Prix, Pukka Pies UK Championship and Betfred.com World Snooker Championship.
In the latter, he beat David Morris 10-6 in the final qualifying round, then was drawn to play Joe Perry at the Crucible but slipped to a 10-4 defeat. “It’s not because I can’t play out there, I know that I can,” said Holt. “When I can get in the balls I can score, I feel good out there and I really enjoy it. I'm just trying to break through. I'm trying so hard to break through. I've been here five or six years on the verge of things but I am just trying so hard. I just need a few wins to give me that belief.
“It’s so frustrating because I am better than that, so much better than that that it's scary. But I need to prove that and hopefully I will one day.”
Holt also reached the final of an event in the short-lived Pro Challenge Series, losing 5-1 to Barry Hawkins.
He has reached four ranking event quarter-finals – the last of those was the 2006 Welsh Open.
Holt’s chief passion away from snooker is music. His idol is Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown and he loves a variety of indie and rock bands including Oasis, Radiohead, The Smiths and Guns ’n’ Roses. His brother Matt plays bass guitar in a popular rock band called The Kull.
He enjoys travelling, he has worked on Greek islands "pulling people into discos" and spent several weeks touring the USA in 2006.
The charismatic Nottingham Forest fan is a friend of the boxer Carl Froch, who often attends his matches.
