After another disappointing season in 2008/09, Gray continued to drop down the rankings, finishing at No 65 and having to rely on a wild card to keep him on the Tour for 2009/10.
His best run came at the Bank of Beijing 2009 World Snooker China Open. After beating Lewis Roberts, Marcus Campbell and Barry Hawkins to earn himself a flight to the Far East, he lost 5-1 in the wild card round to Tian Pengfei.
The northern air seems to suits Gray as his three best performances have come in Scotland and York.
His first ranking final was the 2002 Scottish Open in Aberdeen when he knocked out Stephen Hendry and John Higgins before losing to Stephen Lee. At the same event the following year, this time staged in Edinburgh, he once again got the better of Hendry and Higgins then beat Mark Selby 9-7 to secure the silverware.
In 2004 he reached the final of the UK Championship at the Barbican Centre in York, and made the first maximum break of his career with a 147 against Mark Selby. “It was such a nice feeling to pot the black," said the Londoner after pocketing a £31,000 bonus. "It’s great to have a moment like that and to make a maximum in a big tournament. I was just trying to keep myself together at the end because I was shaking more than ever before.”
However, he was brought back down to Earth in the final as Stephen Maguire romped to a 10-1 victory.
In 1995, Gray became the youngest ever winner of the English Amateur Championship at the age of 16 – though his record has since been beaten by Alex Davies.
Three years later he won the B&H Championship to earn a Masters wild card. His first impact at the World Championship was a shock 10-9 defeat of O’Sullivan in 2000.
Gray is a close friend and practice partner of Jimmy White.
