Gunnell had a mixed season in 2008/09, equalling his best ever ranking event performance at the Grand Prix but failing to win his first match in four others. As a result he dropped six places in the rankings to No 42.
His best run was north of the border in Glasgow. He qualified with wins over Vincent Muldoon and Stuart Bingham and took that form into his first round match with Shaun Murphy. A 5-3 victory put him into the last 16, but after a marathon match against Steve Davis that lasted almost four and a half hours, it was the Nugget who went through 5-4.
It was Davis again who prevented him from qualifying for his home tournament, the UK Championship at Telford.
Gunnell enjoyed a superb start to the 2007/08 season as he matched his best ever performance in a ranking event. Having qualified for the Roewe Shanghai Masters, he beat wild card Jin Long and Ali Carter before losing to Dominic Dale in the last 16. The Shropshire cueman obviously enjoys playing in Asia – all three of his last 16 appearances have come on that continent.
Practising against friend Ian Duffy at a club in Telford in 2003, Gunnell pulled off an extraordinary feat with three maximum 147 breaks in the space of four frames.
His biggest goals are to qualify for the Crucible and get into the top 32 of the rankings.
