Spick’s best run of the 2008/09 season came in the biggest event of them all, the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship. Convincing wins over Stephen Craigie, Barry Pinches and Adrian Gunnell put him within a match of the famous Crucible.
He faced six-time winner Steve Davis and looked set for Sheffield when he won the first five frames, but crucially missed a pink when set to go 6-0 up, before eventually going down 10-8.
That journey to the last 48 equalled his best run in a ranking event.
In 2005, Spick enjoyed a giant-killing run in the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship qualifiers. He won four matches to get through the Challenge Tour phase then beat Dave Gilbert 10-5 before scoring a stunning 10-7 victory over Chinese prodigy Ding Junhui. Spick then beat Bjorn Haneveer by the same scoreline to draw within two wins of the Crucible but eventually lost 10-2 to Stuart Bingham.
Spick won the English Under-15 Championship in 1994 and the English Open in 2001.
