Hamilton dropped nine places down the world ranking list to No 42 after a disappointing 2009/10 season.
His best run took him to the last 32 of the Pukka Pies UK Championship, as he beat Jimmy Robertson 9-4 and Dave Harold 9-5 to qualify for the venue, before losing 9-2 to Mark King.
He also reached the semi-finals of the Pokerstars.com Masters qualifiers, losing to Andrew Higginson when a wild card to Wembley was just two wins away.
But Hamilton lost his opening match in three of the six ranking events and hopes to reverse his slide down the rankings in 2010/11.
He got to the semi-finals of the 2009 Welsh Open at the Newport Centre, knocking out Peter Ebdon, Michael Judge and defending champion Mark Selby. He looked set for the final when he led Ali Carter 3-0, only for Carter to fight back to win 6-5 on his way to the title.
"It would be folly for me to be disappointed. I lost energy midway through the match but felt great towards the end,” said Hamilton.
In 2007, the Sheriff of Pottingham reached the fourth Crucible quarter-final of his career, beating Marco Fu and Ian McCulloch before losing to Stephen Maguire.
Known as one of the most accomplished break-builders in the sport and a member of a select band of players to have made over 100 centuries, Hamilton has appeared in two ranking event finals.
The first was the 1999 British Open in Plymouth when he lost 9-7 to Fergal O’Brien. In 2002 in Shanghai he faced Mark Williams in the China Open final and looked set for the title when he led 8-5, only for the Welshman to fight back to win the last four frames. He did win the Australian Open and Australian Masters - both non-ranking events - in 1995.
Hamilton missed the first three tournaments of the 2000/01 season after breaking his wrist when he boldly tried to stop a mugger stealing his friend’s wallet.
The laid-back and popular cueman, originally from Nottingham but now living in North London, loves watching sport and listening to bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Strokes and The Stone Roses.
