Hamilton’s best run of the 2008/09 season came at the Welsh Open.
After beating Michael Holt 5-3 in the final qualifying round to reach the Newport Centre, he knocked out Peter Ebdon, Michael Judge and defending champion Mark Selby to reach the semi-finals. He looked set for the final when he led Ali Carter 3-0, only for Carter to fight back to win 6-5 on his way to the title.
"It would be folly for me to be disappointed. I lost energy midway through the match but felt great towards the end,” said Hamilton.
Otherwise the season produced few highlights for Hamilton, and it ended in disappointment when he lost 10-5 to Ricky Walden in the final qualifying round of the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship. “Neither Ricky or I played great, but he was the better player,” admitted Hamilton, who dropped out of the top 32 for the first time since 1995. “He’s young and he’s a scoring machine. I’m gutted, but if I’m going to lose I don’t mind losing to Ricky, he’s a sound guy. I’ve had some good draws to qualify over the years but this time I got a very tough one."
In 2007, the Sheriff of Pottingham had reached the fourth Crucible quarter-final of his career, beating Marco Fu and Ian McCulloch before losing to Stephen Maguire.
Known as one of the most accomplished break-builders in the sport and a member of a select band of players to have made over 100 centuries, Hamilton has appeared in two ranking event finals.
The first was the 1999 British Open in Plymouth when he lost 9-7 to Fergal O’Brien. In 2002 in Shanghai he faced Mark Williams in the China Open final and looked set for the title when he led 8-5, only for the Welshman to fight back to win the last four frames. He did win the Australian Open and Australian Masters - both non-ranking events - in 1995.
Hamilton missed the first three tournaments of the 2000/01 season after breaking his wrist when he boldly tried to stop a mugger stealing his friend’s wallet.
The laid-back and popular cueman, originally from Nottingham but now living in North London, loves watching sport and listening to bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Strokes and The Stone Roses.
