Davies had a steady season in 2008/09. His best run came at his home tournament, the Welsh Open.
Wins over Patrick Wallace and Jimmy Michie put him on the verge of his first venue appearance of the season. He faced Dartford’s Barry Hawkins and found himself 3-1 down but fought back to win three of the last four frames including a top break of a 110 to win 5-4.
In the last 32 he struggled to make any impact against Mark Selby, losing 5-0. His run at the Welsh spurred him on in the qualifying rounds of the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship. He beat Lewis Roberts and Michie once more before losing out 10-5 to Jamie Cope, one match short of the Crucible.
Davies reached the venue stages of the Royal London Watches Grand Prix and the Maplin UK Championship during the 2007/08 season.
To qualify for Aberdeen, he finished top of his group, collecting five wins from his seven matches. At the venue he finished fifth out of six in his group, though he did have the satisfaction of claiming the scalps of Stephen Hendry and Jamie Cope in final frame deciders.
To get to Telford, he saw off Kurt Maflin, Mark Davis and Dominic Dale to book a first round encounter with Shaun Murphy. They were all square after the first session but Murphy showed his experience to pull away for a 9-5 victory.
Based in Cardiff but a supporter of Ipswich Town, Davies reached his first ranking event semi-final, the Dubai Duty Free Classic, during his debut season in the professional ranks.
He beat Martin Clark 5-2 in the quarter-finals only to be whitewashed 6-0 by eventual winner John Parrott in the semis.
“The bubble burst today,” he said afterwards. “I was geared up before the match but when I got out there I felt nothing.”
Davies took his revenge on Parrott in the quarter-finals of the 1993 Asian Open, winning 5-2 before losing 5-2 to Dave Harold in the semis. His conqueror once again went on to lift the trophy.
