Davis enjoyed the best season of his career in 2009/10 and leapt ten places up the ranking list to No 26 in the world.
He twice reached the last 16 of ranking events – firstly at the Grand Prix where he beat Marco Fu before losing to Peter Ebdon. The second occasion was at the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship, as he beat Barry Pinches and Dave Harold to reach the Crucible.
There he scored a shock 10-8 victory over Ryan Day, before his run was finally ended by Mark Allen. “My focus has been great all season, but today I missed too many easy balls, which you cannot do against players like Mark,” said Sussex’s finest. “I've really enjoyed playing at the Crucible again, but it's frustrating when you don’t perform to your full potential.”
Davis registered the highlight of his career in 2003 when he captured the B&H Championship title at the Towers Snooker Club in Mansfield.
He knocked out Ian Hurdman, Jason Prince, Andy Hicks, Michael Holt, Drew Henry and Barry Hawkins to reach the final then came from 4-1 down to beat Turkish Cypriot Mehmet Husnu 9-6.
That earned him a wild card to the Masters. “I’ve never been to Wembley, not even to watch,” said Davis. “But everyone tells me there’s a brilliant atmosphere and it will be fantastic to walk out there and play.” He put up an impressive fight against Alan McManus at Wembley but lost 6-5.
Davis took up a course in book-keeping in 2000 in case he dropped off the Main Tour. At the Crucible in 1995, he beat Ken Doherty 10-7 in the first round before losing to Peter Ebdon. Doherty took his revenge when they were drawn together again in the first round in 1997, winning 10-8.
Away from snooker, he enjoys watching Western films. He got married in 2010.
