Davis reached three venues last season and in the process boosted his position in the rankings by 11 places.
His best performance was at the season opener, the Northern Ireland Trophy. Wins over Kuldesh Johal, Jamie Burnett and Joe Swail put him in the last 32. A 5-4 victory over talented Chinese player Ding Junhui put him one win away from equalling his best ranking event performance. However he was unable to see off Ali Carter.
He bounced back to reach both the Bahrain Snooker Championship and Maplin UK Championship venues.
Davis suffered disappointment at Telford when he was forced to retire in the second frame of his first round match with Joe Perry due to illness. He had been fighting a virus but felt unable to continue.
The Sussex player had returned to winning ways the previous season by reaching the venue stage of both the Royal London Watches Grand Prix and the Betfred.com World Snooker Championship.
He topped his group to qualify for the former in Aberdeen, though he was unable to win any of his group matches at the venue.
His Crucible campaign saw him beat Leo Fernandez and Gerard Greene to book his fifth visit to the hallowed venue. He was unfortunate to come up against a resurgent Mark Williams and lost 10-3.
Davis registered the highlight of his career in 2003 when he captured the B&H Championship title at the Towers Snooker Club in Mansfield.
He knocked out Ian Hurdman, Jason Prince, Andy Hicks, Michael Holt, Drew Henry and Barry Hawkins to reach the final then came from 4-1 down to beat Turkish Cypriot Mehmet Husnu 9-6.
That earned him a wild card to the Masters. “I’ve never been to Wembley, not even to watch,” said Davis. “But everyone tells me there’s a brilliant atmosphere and it will be fantastic to walk out there and play.” He put up an impressive fight against Alan McManus at Wembley but lost 6-5.
Davis took up a course in book-keeping in 2000 in case he dropped off the Main Tour. At the Crucible in 1995, he beat Ken Doherty 10-7 in the first round before losing to Peter Ebdon. Doherty took his revenge when they were drawn together again in the first round in 1997, winning 10-8.
