Joe Perry and Jack Lisowski both kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the Players Championship by reaching the last 16 of the ManBetX Gibraltar Open.
For either player to qualify for the lucrative Llandudno event they would have to win the tournament this week in Gibraltar. Players Championship qualification is determined by this season’s one-year money list and Graeme Dott, who isn’t playing this week, is the man being targeted in 16th spot.
The equation will be simplified further with Lisowski and Perry facing each other in the last 16. They are joined by Cao Yupeng in the tomorrow’s final stages, who also needs to lift the trophy to have a chance of qualifying.
Perry secured his place by defeating Michael Wild 4-1. He finished off the win with a run of 113 in the fifth frame. Lisowski trailed Iran’s Soheil Vahedi 2-0 and 3-2 in his last 32 clash. However, the Shanghai Masters semi-finalist eventually came through, taking the decider on the final black to win 4-3.
Scott Donaldson whitewashed amateur Jamie Clarke 4-0 to book his spot in tomorrow’s action. The Perth potter fired in breaks of 53, 52 and 86 on his way to the win. He will face Alfie Burden in the last 16, who defeated recent Shoot Out winner Michael Georgiou 4-2.
Tian Pengfei and Zhang Yong secured an all-Chinese last 16 meeting. Tian defeated Indian number one Aditya Mehta 4-2, while Zhang was a 4-1 victor against compatriot Zhao Xintong.
The event will be played from the last 16 stage to a finish tomorrow.
