His best run in a full ranking event came at the new Indian Open as he knocked out Jimmy White, Marco Fu and Dominic Dale to reach the last 16 before losing to Michael White.

Wilson, a part time taxi driver, also won two matches in the UK Championship to reach the last 32. And he enjoyed some fine results in the European Tour events, particularly the Rotterdam Open where he got to the semi-finals before being edged out 4-3 by eventual winner Mark Williams.

The North-East cueman won the World under-21 title in 2004, beating Thailand's Kobkit Palajin 11-5 in the final. That earned him a place on the main tour and he stayed on for two seasons.
