Ken Doherty defeated Zhang Anda 4-2 to reach the quarter finals of the Kaspersky Riga Masters.
1997 World Champion Doherty dropped off the tour at the end of last season, but was handed an invitational tour card to allow him to continue competing.
The Irishman is making the most of it on his return. He whitewashed Gary Wilson yesterday and defeated Finland’s Robin Hull 4-2 to book his meeting with Zhang.
With the scores locked at 2-2, Doherty crafted runs of 78 and 48 to take two frames on the bounce and progress with a 4-2 victory.
His opponent will be world number 17 Anthony McGill, who saw off Jimmy White 4-1. The Whirlwind is also competing this season courtesy of an invitational tour card. However, he failed to set up a nostalgic clash with Doherty today, with the Scot proving too strong.
Stephen Maguire put on a magnificent display to defeat Jack Lisowski 4-0 and claim his place in the last 16.
The 2004 UK Champion appears to be carrying over his form from the end of last season, where he came through qualifiers at the World Championship to reach the quarter-finals. He made breaks of 139,83 and 93 on his way to the win.
“I’d like to play that all of the time,” said the 36-year-old. “To be honest I’ve just kept playing over the summer, which I’ve never done before and that seems to have paid off. Usually I’d put the cue away for a month but I just kept going.”
Ryan Day edged out world number 13 Kyren Wilson 4-3 to progress. The match swung both ways in what proved to be a high quality encounter. However, it was the Welshman who compiled runs of 119, 90 and 65 on his way to the win.
Two-time World Champion Mark Williams defeated Robbie Williams 4-2 to reach tomorrow’s last 16. Williams crafted breaks of 70, 55 and 70 in the win.
